What is AMT 2008?
Thanks for asking!
AMT 2008 stands for “Aliančný Týždeň Modlitieb 2008” What that means is The Alliance’s Week of Prayer 2008. It is a week that is set aside each January for all of the local evangelical churches to meet every evening in a different church location and pray together.
This year, the foci for prayer have been things like the family, socially needy families/individuals, our city government and more.
I’m telling you this just to give you a little background on a story of encouragement that I received last night at the Vineyard Church as I talked to the pastor prior to the start of the service.
As we talked, he told me that on the 1st Saturday of each month, they have permission from the city to set up tables to distribute flyers about their church and to give out cups of water or hot tea (very appropriate now that we are having freezing temperatures!). They set up the tables very near one of the busiest pedestrian areas in the city and have been having wonderful opportunities to pray with people from 10 years of age to 70+ years of age.
He told me that they had expected the people of Banska Bystrica to be very hard to minister to in this way, but that they have been very surprised by the openness to their offers to pray for people with no strings attached. First of all, for them to give away cups (ceramic cups w/a “Jesus loves you” sticker) for nothing is unheard of. People keep asking “What’s the catch?” or “What do you REALLY want for this cup?”
Secondly, when the offer for prayer is made known, the response of people has been encouraging - primarily from the “softening” that they experience as they pray for these passers-by.
Of course, as these people receive prayer from the church members, they have experienced all kinds of reactions - mostly good. Some have said, “Wow. I feel warm all over.” or “I feel so much better now.”
My prayer is that these passers-by will return to talk more deeply with the believers about why they’re doing what they’re doing and find Christ in this all.
I was encouraged by the boldness of this little church in our city and look forward to the 1st Saturday in February when I will be able to participate with them in this ministry of blessing.
